SIR ANDREW DAVIS (1944-2024)

We were saddened to learn this week of the passing of Sir Andrew Davis.

Many members of BFC, past and present, have treasured memories of a performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius for the 2007 Brighton Festival in Brighton Dome and of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection) for the 2008 Brighton Festival, both with the Philharmonia Orchestra. More mature members remember, too, a performance in 1980 of Berlioz, L’Enfance du Christ, also in the Festival that year.

On all three occasions, Sir Andrew’s friendliness and down-to-earth character shone through.

We were privileged to be amongst those who worked with Sir Andrew and benefitted from his musical insights, and so whilst recognising that his passing provided relief from suffering, we a Chorus also mourn the loss.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
