Vespers of the Blessed Earth

BRIGHTON FESTIVAL 2025   Grammy Award-winning maestro Ludovic Morlot’s nature-themed programme including American eco-activist composer John Luther Adams’s choral prayers to Mother Earth and her endangered species. The new choral epic Vespers of the Blessed Earth by John Luther Adams turns images of clouds, canyons and endangered birds into sounds of soul-shaking beauty… Rather than prayers to the blessed virgin, these are vespers to the blessed earth.

Belshazzar’s Feast

Brighton Festival Chorus join Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra in Walton’s roller-coaster score. Decadent syncopations; a swooping, full-throttle choir; and clattering percussion, slippery trombones, wah-wah trumpets and grooving saxophone. Our soloist is the young American baritone Cody Quattlebaum, fresh from San Francisco Opera and English National Opera, and one of the brightest talents around. British conductor Ben Gernon, a frequent performer at the Proms with the BBC Symphony and BBC Philharmonic, debuted recently with the Vienna Symphony & Royal Stockholm Philharmonic.

Brighton Festival 2023, with Britten Sinfonia

Vaughan Williams said that folk song ‘opened the door’ to discovering his own compositional style. Its spirit certainly hovers over The Lark Ascending, part apotheosis of the English pastoral tradition, part elegy for the folksong-singing culture that the Great War destroyed. A decade later, Brighton-born Frank Bridge wrote a folk-inflected lament for Shakespeare’s Ophelia, still singing ‘snatches of old tunes’ even as she drowns. By 1936, the idyll was over and VW’s cantata Dona nobis pacem offers a desperate plea for peace in a world hurtling towards war.

St Matthew Passion

With Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, a stellar cast of solo singers and the brilliant conductor and harpsichordist Robert Howarth, this is an event in the calendar not to be missed. The searing story of Christ’s betrayal, Last Supper, arrest and death is wrapped in some of Bach’s greatest and most moving music: it can be noble, passionate, tragic, intimate and ultimately meditative. It’s tour de force for every performer onstage.
