Originally commissioned by Minneapolis’s Together In Hope Choir in conjunction with the UNHCR, its interweaving of refugee poems and multi-faith texts in an ecumenical musical mix spells out the message: we are not strangers, but all share a common humanity. Experience choral singing at incredible pace and agility. Be immersed in sensitive, responsive and majestic orchestral playing coupled with virtuosic obligatos. Delight in beautiful arias, all of which bring an immediacy of expression to the words of the mass. Join us for this performance of Bach’s most spectacular work that will be chronicled with an enduring piece of live artwork that will unfold during the performance.
The London Mozart Players, Brighton Festival Chorus and Brighton Festival Youth Choir join forces to present a concert of beautiful, calming, meditative works by five female composers - C. Schumann, Briggs, Tsupryk, Croad & Makaroff. This is followed by Puccini’s rousing, operatic Messa di Gloria. Written early in his life as a farewell to his association with sacred music, the mass is operatic in style and described as, “full of colour, vitality and musical surprises”.
Stunning Venetian polychoral music by Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli rubs shoulders with The Farthest Shore, a dramatic oratorio written by contemporary composer Paul Mealor, who rocketed to fame when his music was performed at the Royal Wedding. All of these will make full use of the cavernous space of All Saint’s Church, Hove, with singers and ensembles in various parts of the building, just as they did in St. Mark’s in Renaissance Venice. BFC are delighted to welcome Chamber Domaine to perform Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Barber’s achingly beautiful Adagio for Strings and Morten Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna - a programme of beautiful choral and orchestral music from 20th century American composers, perfect for a summer’s evening.
Latvian composer, Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Dreams Under Your Feet is an evocative setting of five spiritual poems by Christina G. Rosetti, W. B. Yeats and Sara Teasdale. Mesmerising choral harmonies are accompanied by soaring strings and imaginative percussion. This will be the UK premiere of this choral suite. A second work 'In Paradisum' and Elgar's 'Serenade for Strings' complete our programme.
Our first concert since 2019, and a joy to perform Carmina Burana – one of the most popular choral works ever written – used in everything from TV adverts to horror films. This is because it’s so instantly memorable, and conjures up so many strong visual images throughout its epic, sprawling, occasionally bonkers journey, from the menace of the opening to the heart stopping beauty of the soprano solo – In Trutina. BFC has a long association with the piece, and recorded the version used so memorably in an Old Spice advert. Jonathan Dove is one of the UK’s leading composers, and The Passing of the Year is one of his finest achievements, with glorious harmony, colours and textures. A contemporary yet accessible piece, charged with intensity and beauty.
