Introducing the BFYC Trustee Team

Our Trustee team carries out all the day-to-day functions of the Choir’s administration. We work alongside our professional staff – our Music Director, Juliette and Accompanist, Nick.

We are keen to encourage as many people as possible to take part and enjoy all that BFYC has to offer as choir members, music professionals, volunteers, and our audiences. We place good governance and the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of all our activities and programming.

With passion and friendship, we seek to ensure that our young people have the richest and most inspiring experience whilst singing in the choir – developing their confidence, musicality and having fun together!

Looking after our young singers

Our Designated Safeguarding Officer, Sue Purbrick, has particular responsibility for ensuring that young singers are safe and supported at all times. Sue, BFYC trustees and licenced chaperones are all trained in child protection and a number are also trained in First Aid.

All our professional music staff and unpaid staff are checked by the UK Government’s Disclosure and Barring Service and adhere to our Safeguarding Policy and Procedures.

We welcome BFYC parents or other adults who are able to supervise choir members at BFYC performances and/or rehearsals as local authority licensed volunteer chaperones. Please contact Julie Emerton if you would like more information on joining.

Wendy Forbes

Chair of Board of Trustees

I lead the Trustee team helping to ensure that the choir is well-governed and organised, and that all of our passion for seeing young people develop their voices and their musicality is channelled into the most fulfilling and developmental experience for our young singers. I look after Data Protection and I’m a chaperone. I have been part of this wonderful team since 2002 and have sung in BFC since 1976.

Julie Emerton

I am responsible for the day to day running of the choir. I liaise between choir members, parents, chaperones, our Music Director and team of trustees to ensure all runs smoothly. You can e-mail me for information on the choir or if you’d like to join.  I have been with BFYC since 2002 and also sing as an alto with BFC.

Hilary Orrom

I work as Treasurer and am responsible for all things financial.  Although we charge a membership fee for BFYC, we want to ensure that no-one is discriminated against on the grounds of cost. I’m happy to chat – we will always give sympathetic consideration to anyone suffering financial hardship.
I am a long-time member of Brighton Festival Chorus, have been a Trustee of BFYC since 2012, and am a licensed chaperone, and first-aider.

Susan (Sue) Purbrick

Safeguarding Officer

I have responsibility for Safeguarding which means I would be the person to speak to or contact by email if anyone in the youth choir has worries. I also look after health and safety issues related to the choir at the rehearsal and concert venues. A former GP, I have been a trustee of the Brighton Festival Youth Choir and a chaperone since 2022 & I sing with Brighton Festival Chorus as a soprano.

Anne Boyce

I have been a trustee with BFYC for 10 years and am also an accredited chaperone and qualified first-aider. I love to see how our young people blossom and gain so much self-confidence when they sing with BFYC. I sing with Brighton Festival Chorus in the alto section.

Andrew Manning Jones

Trustee & Chaperone

I am the link trustee for the Charity Commission who regulate charities such as BFYC to ensure they are accountable, well run and meet their legal obligations. I have been a trustee of the Brighton Festival Youth Choir since the trust was formed in 2007 and a chaperone since 2018. I also sing with Brighton Festival Chorus as a tenor.

Fiona McNae

I have the great pleasure of being a Trustee of both Brighton Festival Chorus and Youth Choir.  I help support the many operational, developmental & creative possibilities of working together, for all our singers.
